Understanding Shoulder Tendonitis and its Treatments

Shoulder tendonitis occurs when the tendons located on the shoulder’s rotator cuffs are swelling, irritated or inflamed. It may be caused by an injury, a repetitive strain, or a pinched nerve. This condition is common in athletes and other individuals who frequently do activities that require their shoulders to be lifted or moved such as weight lifting, swimming, and climbing. It often starts with a slight ache on the upper bicep but when left untreated, the pain can spread to the entire shoulder.
The rotator cuff in the shoulder is composed of muscles that keep the shoulder joint stable. These muscles encompass the humerus and the scapula. Though the muscles are not as large as those of the other parts of the body, it is vital in function because without it, the shoulder’s joint will be easily dislocated. During exercise, the shoulders are perhaps among the most neglected parts so as people age, the shoulders wear and eventually loses its strength.
One of the causes of shoulder tendonitis is sudden change in posture. With this, bones can be impinged which could eventually develop to shoulder tendonitis. Pain from shoulder tendonitis may lead to either complete or fractional tear which requires surgery as a treatment.
Shoulder Tendonitis Diagnosis
When you start feeling a sharp pain and tenderness in the shoulder, visit a physician right away. Avoid doing strenuous activities especially those that will require the use of your shoulders because it could worsen your condition. The doctor will initially study your medical history and do a physical examination. An X-ray may also be requested by the doctor to ensure that you have shoulder tendonitis.
Shoulder Tendonitis Prevention
To prevent having shoulder tendonitis, make sure that you do warm up exercises before you do any activity that is physically demanding. Warm ups and stretching must take at least about 5
minutes in minimum. When doing exercises, do not push your shoulders too much because this could strain your tendons. You may ask a physical therapist or research for the right techniques online.
Shoulder Tendonitis Treatment
Sharp pains in the shoulder will be best treated when rested. Avoid doing activities that will entail shoulder movement for 2 to 3 weeks. Do not risk injuring your tendon permanently so to avoid a more serious condition, stop doing activities that could worsen the injury. Furthermore, apply cold compress or ice on the affected shoulder. Ice will lessen inflammation so apply it on your shoulder every 4 hours for at least 15 minutes.
Compression will also help. With the use of bandage, wrap the affected shoulder and be sure that you cover it firmly and tight enough. There should be enough room for muscle contraction and blood flow. This will help reduce swelling. Also, keep the affected shoulder elevated. This will enable your injured tendon to heal faster.
If the pain is causing you too much discomfort, you may use over-the-counter drugs to ease the ache such as naproxen, advil or ibuprofen. However, effects of pain relievers and anti- inflammatory drugs are only temporary. You may use oral pain relievers in conjunction with localized injection. After the drug is injected on you, you may need to rest for about 2 days to fully recover.
Some patients with shoulder injuries experience tightness in their ligaments thus, doctors recommend stretching to get the shoulders back in good condition. However, exercises are only recommended when the pain had already subsided. Stretching and exercises are meant to strengthen the shoulder muscles and prevent further pain in the rotator cuffs. The exercises must be moderate and must not use resistance or weight. Discomfort must not be felt, otherwise, stop the activity to avoid more damage.
The shoulder exercises must be done at least twice or thrice weekly after the pain is totally gone. Most of the time, patients who had shoulder tendonitis becomes prone to experiencing the condition again so you have to take better care of your shoulder muscles. This condition may be managed on your own but once the pain becomes recurrent and unbearable, it is best to seek medical advice from a professional.
